The Dark Tower II

The waves from the ocean woke Roland. He had been sleeping on the beach. The tide had risen and his legs were wet. He scrambled to get out of the water to protect his guns and ammunition. Water on his shells could ruin them. Suddenly he was attacked by large lobster creatures and one of them clipped off two fingers on the gunslinger’s right hand and one of his toes. After a struggle he trampled the little monsters. Roland wrapped his bleeding hand then dried his ammunition and guns. The guns could be broken down and oiled. The shells could be ruined. So he separated the completely dry shells from the damp ones.

Roland knew he was starving. He was developing an infection from the lobster bites. He had little water. He decided to walk north on the beach. He walked maybe four miles and he saw something ahead. He struggled to reach it. It was a door.

Upon inspection he could look through the door and see the earth from above. He decided to go through the door. He discovered he occupied another man’s body. The gunslinger’s first priority was food so he asked the flight attendant for a popkin. Then Roland changed it to a sandwich. Roland was seeing through the eyes of Eddie Dean. Roland could access the thoughts, memories and ideas that Eddie had. Roland took the sandwich back to his sick body on the beach. He discovered that Eddie was trying to get cocaine through customs. This would mean jail and Roland could not get any medicine for his sick body back on the beach from jail. Roland had to get the cocaine to the beach so Eddie would not go to jail. He took one of Eddie’s coins back to the beach and it did go through. He took one of his shells and coin and rejoined Eddie’s mind. The shell did not come through the door but the coin did. Roland talked to Eddie. Eddie thought he was hallucinating but soon realized he had to go through the door with Roland to hide the cocaine or he would never make it through customs. A flight attendant had seen the bags he was carrying inside his coat. Roland was aware of the potential danger of jail so he got Eddie to go to the bathroom, through the door with him and they left the drugs on the beach. The custom’s agent held Eddie but eventually they had to let him go. They had no evidence.

Roland counted five separate tails. Eddie bought more food and Roland went back to his body.

Eddie was worried about his brother Henry. Eddie’s brother had done too many drugs and continued to abuse their use. Eddie had to take care of Henry now. Eddie was carrying for Balazar who owned a pizza place as a cover. The Tower of Pizza. When Roland heard and saw the word Tower he freaked out big time and Eddied had to calm him down.

Balazar sent Jack Andolini to pick up Eddie. Eddie knew Andolini was Balazar’s number one right hand man. They believed Eddie had taken the drugs. Balazar kidnapped Henry to secure Eddie’s cooperation. Balazar had Eddie undress completely and one of his men searched him internally to make sure he wasn’t hiding the drugs. Eddie convinced Balazar to let him go in the bathroom to retrieve the drugs. The bathroom was searched and they determined there were no drugs. Balazar let Eddie go in the bathroom but Jack Andolini had to go with him. Once in the bathroom Eddie/Roland grabbed Andolini and all of them fell through the door.

Jack was very upset to find himself on the beach with Eddie and another man. Roland shot Jack but it was a wet shell. A very strange thin then occurred. Roland got off another round and it hit Jack’s right hand. In doing so, the bullet also hit Jack’s gun which exploded blowing off Jack’s hand and his face. Jack was still walking and then the lobster monsters attacked him and Jack was soon minced and dead.

Now Eddie had to take the cocaine he had left on the beach back to Balazar. Once back in Eddie’s world, a gun battle ensued. Roland had given Eddie one of his guns since he could now only shoot with his left hand. Eddie shot and killed and was doing well until he saw someone had decapitated Henry. He continued to fire an empty gun out of hysteria. With everyone dead Eddie mourned the death of his brother. The police would be there soon. Roland wanted Eddie to make the decision to join Roland on his quest for the Dark Tower. The only thing Roland promised Eddie if he came with him was that he would not be bored and death was very likely. Roland described the Dark Tower as a bolt that holds reality together. Eddie said he didn’t have any plans. Wanting to get a fix before they went through the door, Roland said, “That part of your life is over.”

Eddie gave Roland antibiotics for maybe a week. Roland got better. Eddie was feeding Roland good food. One day when Roland was awake for a while Eddie told him he had shot the lobster monsters and cooked them. Roland did not like the idea but it was food. After about a week, Roland said to move north. Eddie built a lift and pulled Roland on it. They traveled for days. The landscape was the same. The ocean’s beach looked the same. After the sun set the lobster monsters came out at night. Then Roland saw something on the beach at a great distance. When finally Eddie could see it they knew it was another door. It was a door to draw the second person for Roland’s quest for the Dark Tower.

At the door Roland went through to find himself inside the mind of a black woman. She had lost her legs at the knees when someone had pushed her in the subway three years earlier. Her legs were cut off by a train. Her life was saved by an intern who was riding along with the paramedics. When Roland entered her mind she was stealing jewelry from Macy’s in New York City. When Roland brought her back to the beach he was greeted by a lovely black lady Odetta Holmes. Eddie immediately fell in love with her. She was a kind, well-spoken, educated woman. Soon they discovered that Odetta had a second personality Detta. Detta was a foul-mouthed nasty woman. And she was mean. She had two distinct personalities. Odetta was kind where Detta was dangerous. Detta would deliberately flip herself out of her chair just to slow their progress. Roland continued to get sicker. Odetta’s personality resurfaced and Eddie left her with a gun to protect her against the large cats they heard crying. Eddie then put Roland in the wheel chair and pushed him up the beach in search of the next door so Roland could go after more antibiotics. They brought the door back to where they had left Odetta but she was gone. Eddie searched for her but Detta had was now in control and she had hidden in a burrow with the gun. Roland left Eddie with his other gun and Roland went through the door. He entered the mind of the Pusher Jack Mort. Mort was an accountant and a serial killer. Roland had entered the mind of the man who pushed Odetta onto the railroad tracks. Roland knew this was no coincidence.

Eddie, exhausted fell asleep. Detta was extremely strong and she put a noose around Eddies neck then tied him up and placed him on the beach for the lobster monsters. She waited by Roland’s body gun in hand. She watched and saw what Roland saw through the door.

Roland in control of Mort went to a gun supply store, tangled with two policemen who aided him in his acquisition of two hundred shells. Roland paid sixty dollars for them.

Next Roland as Mort went to the pharmacy where he had to hold up the druggist and demanded the antibiotics. He did not have any money but left Mort’s $6,500 Rolex as payment.

Then Roland told Mort to take him to the A-train where Mort had pushed Odetta and she had lost her legs. At the A-train Roland concentrated with all his will toward Odetta Holmes and Detta Walker to watch through the door. There she saw Jack Mort jump into the path of the A-train. He was cut in half at the waist.

Roland came through the door and he saw two women Odetta and Detta. They were struggling. It had been Odetta’s loss of her legs that had created the Detta Walker personality.

Eddie was about to get eaten by the lobstosities.

A new person emerged from the struggle between Odetta and Detta. Roland called her Susan. She was the third person, formed from Odetta and Detta, Roland had drawn.

Eddie was rescued from the monsters by Susan.

They continued their journey north on the beach. They reached an area where there was a fresh pool of water. There they rested for days until Roland regained his strength. Roland told Eddie he loved him and Susan. Roland let them know he would sacrifice them if need be and most likely their quest will end in death but in the mean time they will fight and struggle and the three of them would be magnificent together.

Eddie said Roland had saved him from certain death and that Eddie knew he did not want to die a dirty man. Roland told Eddie they had more than a world to save on their quest for the Dark Tower.

The Drawing of the Three is the second book of the Dark Tower Series. This is an awe inspiring aspect of how Roland finds his gunslingers. King utilizes such a clever tool to introduce you to Roland's new gunslingers. The way in which the gunslingers are drawn to Roland is fascinating. The characters of each person is so well defined you will know them well when you begin the next book Waste Lands. In such a short time Roland has endured himself to his gunslingers and they are willing to face death with him and for him. They realize their quest is beyond their understanding of importance. Roland loves them. You, will love the three.
